Dhaka’s rich and mighty have been keeping a low profile since we got here. The caretaker government’s crackdown on corruption has seen a lot of them arrested. Those who avoided jail, or were among those recently been released on bail, have been careful not to draw attention to themselves with conspicuous displays of wealth.
So it surprised me when one of our wealthier neighbours decided not just to decorate his house with fairy lights for his daughter’s wedding (as is fairly common), but also the two streets leading up to it as well.
I have to say that the lights looked terrific – they really were a gift to the whole neighbourhood. But I wondered also if this was not a sign that the rich are coming out into the open once again.
After all, the elections are taking place in just over a month, and the caretakers and their army friends are on their way out. And I am sure I have seen many more expensive cars on Dhaka’s streets recently.
